A Jar is a specialized tool used in oil drilling to free stuck drilling tools. It works by storing energy under tension and releasing it instantaneously to generate a powerful shock wave that acts on the stuck drill string, loosening and freeing it. Based on the operating mechanism, jars are mainly categorized into mechanical, hydraulic, and hydro-mechanical types. They can also be classified by installation method as drilling-type, fishing-type, and surface-type.
Working Principle
The jar operates by converting tensile stress from the drill string into kinetic energy. By pulling up or lowering the drill string, the jar is triggered to release energy abruptly. This sudden burst of intense impact force can break up or loosen the stuck point, thereby freeing the drilling assembly and restoring normal drilling operations.
Classification
By Type:
- Mechanical Jars: Use a ribbed slip mechanism to generate fixed or adjustable impact force.
- Hydraulic Jars: Utilize hydraulic damping to deliver unidirectional impact with long delay and stepless adjustment capabilities, though they are relatively less reliable.
Hydro-Mechanical Jars: Combine the advantages of mechanical and Hydraulic jars. They can switch to mechanical mode if the hydraulic system fails, making them the current industry mainstream.
By Installation Method:
- Drilling-Type Jars: Integrated into the drill string assembly, they can be activated in real time during drilling to free stuck pipe, offering high efficiency.
- Fishing-Type Jars: Used in fishing operations and deployed downhole to act on the stuck point.
- Surface-Type Jars: Connected to the surface section of the drill string to perform jarring operations at the wellhead.
Primary Functions
- Freeing Stuck Pipe:
This is the jar’s main function. It delivers upward or downward impacts to break up the stuck point and restore freedom of movement to the drilling tools.
- Preventing Escalation of Incidents:
Promptly addressing stuck pipe incidents helps prevent further complications and reduces economic losses.
Applica
Jars are widely used in complex drilling operations such as deep wells and directional drilling.
