Dissolvable Materials Reshape Oilfield Operations

Dissolvable materials, mainly magnesium – based alloys, revolutionize oil and gas extraction via smart, controlled dissolution. Tailored to 20–200°C downhole conditions, they adapt to temperature and salinity (0.84%–3% KCl), with adjustable 20–300 mg/cm²·h dissolution rates. This keeps them structurally sound under pressure for easy post – operation removal.

In oilfields, dissolvable bridge plugs (shown in images) fit 3.5″–5.5″ casings, enduring 70 MPa during fracturing. Photos track their dissolution: starting as a solid seal, they break down gradually. In 175°C wells, they hold pressure then dissolve in days. They also enable dissolvable screens and temporary supports, cutting costly retrievals.

These “set – and – forget” materials offer big benefits. They slash 50% of operational costs by axing milling/retrieval. Environmentally, no metal debris means less waste. Flowback speeds up, getting wells producing faster. Field tests prove reliability: dissolving over 20 days in 40°C wells, or just 120 hours in 135°C ones.
